Bracebridge’s new arena/recreation complex will be located at the end of Salmon Ave.
The announcement came Friday afternoon from Mayor Graydon Smith, who was joined at the site by the donors of the land – Cindy and Monte Goble of Willen Investments Inc.
“It gives me great pleasure to announce that Willen Investments Inc. has generously donated 22 acres of land, located beyond the end of Salmon Avenue, for the development of a new recreation facility in our community,” said Smith to a crowd of several dozen people who gathered to hear the announcement.
Smith said the Town had looked at several sites but the property on Salmon Avenue was ideal because it keeps the arena close to the central core. The location is just off Wellington Street between Gagnon’s Your Independent Grocer and Monck Public School.
Cindy Goble said she’s excited to watch the development proceed.
“My family has owned this property in Bracebridge for over 30 years and it’s our pleasure to contribute a substantial portion of our land for the betterment of the citizens of the Town of Bracebridge,” she said.
The next step in the process is to put out an RFP for design specifics, said Smith, but a firm timeline for the entire project has yet to be nailed down.
Smith said there aren’t any specifics on the cost either but they plan to work with both the federal and provincial governments to help fund the project.
There’s been talk of a new arena possibility incorporating an indoor soccer field or a new library facility, and Smith said those are still both on the table.
“This will give us the ability to look at those options more fully,” said Smith.
