The father-daughter relationship is a special one but when it comes to braids and buns some dads might need a little bit of guidance.
That’s where Kimberly York and the Dads and Braids program can step in to help fathers up their hairstyling game.
“Our purpose for the program is to give dads and their daughters a chance to bond and connect by spending time with each other in a relaxed, fun environment,” says York, the organizer of Dads and Braids. “It’s also to teach the dads how to do their daughter’s hair.”
Over the past 12 months, Dads and Braids has hosted events in Bracebridge and Huntsville and now they’re ready to offer their services to Gravenhurst. The first Gravenhurst Dads and Braids will take place at the Gravenhurst Chamber of Commerce on Oct. 25. With more events also set for Bracebridge and Huntsville in the next two months, the program has taken on a life of its own in a short period of time.
“We got started almost a year ago when I put a feeler in the Facebook forum Let’s Make Bracebridge Great Again, asking the community if this would be of interest,” says York. “The response was overwhelming.”
Two weeks later, the first event was held at the Muskoka Natural Food Market in Bracebridge with 10 dads and their daughters.
“The response in the beginning was great – we had two full events, full meaning 10 dads, and the support from the community was incredible,” says York.
Although York said the number of dads attending has tapered somewhat, the dads who do attend have greatly enjoyed the experience and many continue to use the skills they picked up.
“We hope to branch out throughout Muskoka,” she says. “It’s just trying to find the connections in order for us to do so.”
In addition to their first ever event in Gravenhurst, Dads and Braids also has upcoming events set for
Oct. 22 in Bracebridge at Gagnon’s Independent Grocer and Nov. 19 in Huntsville at Robinson’s Your Independent Grocer. All classes are all from 1 – 2 P.M.
